“Ding” Darling Hits 75-Year Milestone

The “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge Marks 75th Anniversary The refuge celebrated its 75th anniversary on December 1, 2020. Nationally-syndicated cartoonist and island resident Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling played a key role in Harry Truman’s 1945 Executive Order establishing the Sanibel National Wildlife Refuge. The 6,400-acre refuge was renamed in Darling’s honor in 1967.

Sea Turtle Program

The Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation has helped Sanibel Island become a prime nesting zone along the Southwest Florida coast for sea turtles such as the Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Kemps Ridley and Green Turtle. The nests are cordoned off and monitored and a fleet of island volunteers documents the status of the nests. Bobcat Release!

The CROW Case of the Year in the 2020-21 issue of Island Scene magazine is the story of a female bobcat hit by a car and successfully released. The sub-adult bobcat was hit in the evening on May 7, 2020 as it was crossing Buckingham Road in Fort Myers. Tammy Streets was driving behind the vehicle that hit her and acted quickly by calling her high school friend, Cat Turner, a former senior staff rehabilitator & sea turtle tech at CROW. Cat and her husband, Kent Turner, rushed to the scene.
